The heritage of martial arts in Japan is very sacred. All Dojos (a hall or space for immersive learning or meditation. Traditionally in the field of martial arts, the term literally means “Place of the Way” in Japanese) have a shrine and the sport is revered across the country.
Here is a glimpse into Nigel’s experience.
For Nigel’s first trip to the gym in a while! Runners Need commissioned him for a series of powerful portraits and action shots based in a gym environment.
Nigel’s recent commission for Puma took him to Barcelona for the Mantra project with their ambassador Lewis Hamilton.
Nigel was airlifted by helicopter to the village of Corbera d’Ebre to reach the church that is reborn, Esglèsia de Sant Pere.
Esglèsia de Sant Pere sits atop the horrific sight of a village caught in the Spanish civil war. The town was completely destroyed during the Battle of the Ebro (25 July–16 November 1938) and although the lower part of the town was rebuilt by the Spanish, the Catalan side was left in ruins. This side has only recently been rebuilt, and the church of Esglèsia de Sant Pere was refurbished with its original walls maintained. The new glass roof allows light in from the heavens to illuminate the building’s history.
The location was selected for it’s mix of worn surfaces with pure light and dense shadows, built on a gritty aesthetic that devotes itself to a spiritual training session, one of the body and mind.
Lewis works hard to achieve perfection but his inherent spirituality and own personal Mantra, as shown by his tattoos ‘Still I Rise’ & ‘Powerful Beyond Measure’. These encapsulate how his talent is not solely down to his rigorous training and natural gift but also from a higher power.
Nigel gets up close and personal with jockeys at the infamous ‘White Turf’ horse race.
What makes this horse race so unique is the fact it all takes place among the stunningly beautiful, snow-capped mountains of St Moritz.
An ideal setting for any sports photography, we’d best get some blinkers and keep that Champagne out of sight!
Nigel and his team made their way across Europe to capture this series. In the stunning mountains of Slovenia, talent and crew made camp in and amongst the natural beauty.
On this trip, Nigel continued his work with drones but also took a step closer for true POV angles. Nigel’s ability to treat a still shoot like a film set enables him to create lasting moments for an all-immersive visual.
Guy readies his lens for the fastest women in a wheelchair, Hannah Cockroft MBE.
Guy’s new collaborative project with Hannah focusses on her power and strength. The series was conceived to showcase her suitability for sponsors, the likes of Adidas who in the past have overlooked disabled athletes.
Nigel took on Bristol’s urban jungle in the midsts of winter for Runners Need.
The location enabled Nigel to approach his subject matter from a range of elevations, leading to new and dramatic shots.
Nigel photographed Solomon’s sportswear in action for Snow & Rock’s ‘Mountain Athletic’ promo from some chilly heights.
It’s time to wrap up warm!
Cheil South Korea approached Nigel for an authentic lifestyle shoot centred around a range of new products; the Samsung Gear Sport.
The king of lifestyle took his experienced team on a 5-day shoot across the UK, creating realistic moments. In the process, Nigel adopted a new style of running. This came about as he lined the product up for the perfect angle on a speeding bicycle on day 1 @Camber Sands, he nicknamed it ‘the crab’.
Nigel kept spirits high on the long shoot days, even performing a rain dance. Which worked, if you count the rain machine…
The team is proud to see these stunning images go live, so keep an eye out!
‘Peak performance’ is the latest commission for Nigel Riches through Snow & Rock. Shooting sport photography is a passion for Nigel and in this campaign for North Face’s new sportswear we get to see elite athletes captured hard at work.
