Nigel started shooting with film 25years ago, printing all his own work in dark rooms; the idea of an instant image was pure alchemy. With no mobile phones on location no twitter nor any Facebook you trusted the photographer to bring home the results, based on a dozen Polaroid’s.
As the iconic photographer Duffy once remarked, “anyone can use a digital camera and get results, but give them a violin and they will die on their feet”.
Lifestyle photography is very much a way of life for Nigel; he has shot on every continent, from the Arctic Circle to the Namib Desert, from Death Valley to the summit of Kilimanjaro. He is a proficient diver and shoots underwater in open ocean or pools.
Perhaps what sets Nigel’s work apart from many, is his ability to shoot with natural light, whether using ambient street light or shooting into a sunset it is all about creating a realistic atmosphere, this filmic style allows models to feel relaxed and create the most natural and unposed images, it also allows for shoots to be quite low key and unobtrusive, with only small amounts of equipment.
Nigel’s clients and models work with him for years, his first assistant (Dave) has been with him for 15years and this is probably because his shoots have no hierarchy they are based around everyone being trusted to do their job, as Margaret Thatcher once said “if you employ a plumber, let them plumb”.
And to this end everyone has their say if they need to, and most importantly the atmosphere is always relaxed but hardworking.
